What Front Door Should You Choose?

Your front door is the first impression you can make on first-time guests. It should reflect your style and preferences and give a sneak peek to your friends on what to expect inside. But, it can be hard navigating through all the different materials and glass products that are on offer. That’s why, if you’re based in the South London area, consider working with a professional glass Wimbledon company that can help advise you on the best choices specifically for your home.
At Prentice Glass, our team of glass specialists are here to break down the most common front door types. What the benefits are of each product. And, how our glass London merchants can help.
Timber
For years, timber has been a popular choice for front doors as the material offers security and protection against harsh weather conditions. Timber is a natural insulator, so it will keep the heat in during the colder months and keep the interior cool during summer. This can help save energy bills and stop homeowners from turning on the heating or cooling system.
Also, timber is extremely durable and lasts for a long time when treated correctly. Even if damage occurs, this typically does not mean that replacement is necessary. Make sure you work with a glass specialist to ensure that the door installation and the glass products featured are installed correctly and meet the specifications of your home.

UPVC
Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride, or uPVC, is a tough kind of plastic. It is a well-liked building material due to its toughness, longevity and ease of maintenance. That’s why our glass Wimbledon company utilises the material through a range of glass products and doors.
Another benefit of uPVC is that it is also cost-effective and one of the more affordable materials on the market. And, they are very easy to maintain. As they are highly durable, it is hard to properly damage the material and will offer protection against water entering the property and withstanding scratches and knocks.

Aluminium
Another popular choice, aluminium doors provide good thermal and acoustic insulation, as well as weather resistance. That’s why its reliability creates a high-end entrance door material. These features, in a variety of designs, make not just a door that is aesthetically pleasuring, but also one that can be counted on for years to come.
These are ideal for back garden entrances, for which more space is required. Whether this is multi-folding doors to extend a living space or single french doors. Aluminium can be double-glazed or triple-glazed, depending on your specifications.
At Prentice, our team of glass merchants stock thermally efficient aluminium doors that are double glazed. Find out more about these glass products here.
Commercial Glass
But, what about doors that are not in residential properties? New fire regulations dictate that doors have to withstand flames for at least 30 minutes to help in emergencies. Any new build that has more than three floors needs to have fire doors fitted to every room that leads to a stairwell. This includes ensuring that the opening force is a maximum of 30N for the first 30°, then 22.5N between 30 and 60°. This will help with safe evacuations throughout properties.
At Prentice, our glass Wimbledon company ensures that all our door installations meet industry standards and keep up to date with new fire regulations. This could mean that your current door, whether this is in a residential block of flats or a commercial property, needs to be updated.
