What Is Safety Glass Used For?

Safety Glass Protecting Children

Safety glass has gained popularity and significance as a material to be used in both homes and workplaces. It can be used for a variety of things, including windows, glass doors, side panels, patio doors, shower cubicles and conservatories. Given that it can reduce the risk of injuries, it has gained popularity among families with young children in particular. This type of glass has also evolved into a necessary component of offices in tall buildings.

What Is Safety Glass?

Safety glass, also known as tempered glass, was invented in 1909. Extra safety precautions have been taken to make the glass less likely to break or to present a threat if it does. Regular glass can break if it is struck or dropped from a sufficient height, but safety glass has undergone special processing to make it more durable. It is less likely to break when struck with a force thanks to this, and if it does break, the size of the shards will also be smaller.

Where Is Safety Glass Used?

Any space designated as a “critical location” or where there is a possibility that a glass break could result in significant damage or injury uses safety glass. The primary uses for safety glass are windows at ground level, sliding glass doors, vehicle windows, and shower doors.

How Is It Made?

Polyvinyl butyral (PVB), a thin, flexible layer of clear plastic film, is sandwiched between two or more pieces of glass by the manufacturer to create laminated safety glass. The plastic film keeps the glass in place when it breaks, reducing the risk of injuries from flying glass. As an alternative, it is produced by heat treating glass sheets to strengthen them.

Why It Is Important

This kind of glass is crucial because it gives vulnerable individuals and those who live in vulnerable environments a sense of security. They would be less likely to sustain injuries in the unfortunate event that an accident did happen.
